1 Mar 2009 08:37 pm - Vision correction is for sinners
Harogasm
From this thread.

snarkhunter:
Contact lenses are unnatural. If God wanted you to be able to see without glasses, he would've given you good vision.

Adam and Eve didn't wear contacts. No one in the Bible wears contacts. It's against some law in Deuteronomy that I can't quote b/c I've never actually read the Bible, but I know what's right and what's wrong, and contacts are WRONG.

The pro-contact agenda is corrupting our youth. They shouldn't be around contact-wearers. Everyone knows they're promiscuous (since boys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses, girls who wear contacts are sluts).

Stand up for the rights of non-contact-wearers!
mmanurere:
Vision correction is immoral! Anyone with less-than-perfect vision deserves it, and must have sinned in some way to bring about their affliction.
6 Oct 2008 03:28 am - Birth control—why me?
Harogasm
Will male birth control ever become a reality?

Until then, my choices: (a) even more mood swings and breast cancer, (b) 15-20% failure rate, (c) surgery, (d) joining a cloister.

That last one sounds good.
2 Oct 2008 08:18 pm - (1) LJ hackers; (2) Feminazism
Harogasm
FYI to all: LJ hackers.

(So yes, back-up is good idea.)

ETA:
While I was reading the Biden versus Palin debate live-blog on BBC, there was this one comment: "Sorry, feminazis and left wing liberals you tried to destroy her and lost."

WELL I WOULDN'T MIND BEING CALLED A FEMINAZI.
16 Aug 2008 08:31 pm - Wall•E
Summer
My dad was determined to get me in a movie theatre with him, so I went to see Wall•E today. I'm very impressed with the film—I have so many things to say about it and I can't keep them straight! Read more... )

You know what? Forget everything I've said about smoking being a nuisance. Being Chinese Valentine's Day, the five star hotel's restaurant we ate in was packed. Which means: non-smoking section? What non-smoking section? The second-hand smoke translates my runny nose and sore throat into spectacular hacking fits.

On to other topics.

The Chinese have a phrase, "Shanghai men". There's no "Beijing men" or "Guangzhou women". It's always "Shanghai men". One woman related, "One day I took the bus in Shanghai. It drove past the back doors of residences. Through every back door, I could see a man working in the kitchen preparing dinner. And whenever I pass by the river, I see a row of men doing the laundry." Ah, the joys of female empowerment.

On TV the other day, a reporter from Hong Kong interviewed Beijing's volunteer community patrol. The reporter asked if the volunteers received any subsidies. A volunteer replied, "At first, they cooked green bean soup for us to drink. Now, they probably don't have spare time, so they give us a bag of green beans for us to take home and cook ourselves."

Next time: Suzhou history and Asian insults. Probably.

Gendering genderless characters.

I've been wondering about this for a while. At my last workplace, there was this large wall-scroll of an animated film where it was evident that all but 2 characters in the poster were male. Why? Because the females had skirts, eyeliner, and come-hither looks, that's why. I didn't know if I should be pissed at myself for stereotyping or pissed at the studio for stereotyping.

Anyway, I haven't seen WALL-E yet (short of the initial trailer, a trailer in Chinese, and that giant WALL-E model in Taipei). From the two seconds I've seen EVE I think it's male. (So now I actually have to go to a movie theatre *facepalm*)

Wank.

Background: a fannish wiki, which has outed the real names of several fan-writers in the past (including, did it again. The owner of the site exacerbated the wank in order to drive up hits to the site.

If this was 2001 I'd be worried, as it was ridiculously easy to web-search my name then. Now? Nahhhh. Go unisex given names and common surnames!
3 Jun 2008 10:58 pm - Strip club ads
Harogasm
There are many laments about sexually degrading ads or sexually provocative ads where the kiddies can see them. Ms. magazine, the old vanguard of American feminism, has a regular section called "No Comment", where it reprints ads it finds offensive.

One of these articles was in The Observer the other day, about the proliferation of prominent ads for strip clubs in public venues. Across from school for 17-year-olds! Blasphemy! Read more... )
20 May 2008 04:52 am - Skirts and Pants
Summer
Taiwan's new president was inaugurated today. There were bets being made about whether his wife, Chow Mei-ching, would wear a skirt or pants. Ms. Chow never wears skirts or make-up, very much a powerhouse woman. But for this occasion, she showed up in a skirt, with a new hairdo and a bit of make-up.

However, despite pressure from her husband's party and the opposition, Ms. Chow is determined to stay in her job as legal director of a major bank, making her the only Taiwanese first lady to keep her job, rather than be a supportive wife to the president. (Full story here.) I hope she doesn't ever decide to stop being a career woman—in an Asian country, it's especially important for women to show that they can be independent of their husbands.

I told myself I was not. Paying. Attention. to Tenimyu fandom any more, but I was wrong.

ADACCHIN'S BACK!

*happy*

In other news, Here is Greenwood is becoming a TV drama! Now that BL fandom is on the up-and-up, they're digging out all the old "spring of youth" classics. (Takumi-kun series isn't that old, but Greenwood? Wow. There's barely even a fandom for that nowadays. All about to change~. Rumour says there's going to be some good people on the cast.)
13 Feb 2008 11:19 pm - Genki AND Nitro?
Harogasm
Haven't checked [info]gekipuri in a while. When I do today I find:

Ookawa Genki starring in adaptation of Minekura Kazuya's manga Wild Adapter

(from the production company's site and Minekura's blog)

asdlfsjf;aslfdj OMFG MY UNCONSCIOUS PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED.

(Also good news, Bus Gamer vol 1 is coming out! I'm guessing to coincide with the anime release.)

Anyway, I gave a bunch of random search terms to Google, involving universities and a Trading Spaces designer, and I get a blog back called Feminist Engineer ([info]femengineer). I think I am quite good at this :D

I found some of my old study sheets for Math 200, and I can't read them at all :x It reminds me of our professor-issued cheat-sheets for Phys 101, which I was never able to read.
