18 Nov 2009 08:50 pm - Symptoms of Sleep Deprivation

1.me: Where's my wallet?
Ivan: You told me to put it in your backpack just now, so I did.
me: I did?

2.  "Squee, pretty Tsubasa pictures! What, Tsubasa has ended? Nooooooooo—

"Wait a minute, I'm not in the fandom, am I."

3.  "What the **** is a const function!?! ... Damn it, I just looked this up last week."

4.  Instead of figuring out which of the surplus of Javascript libraries to use, I coded my own "multi-select tags to display items" function. It's working fine, but the way it handles CSS is not quite flexible enough, so I will be working on that.
10 Dec 2008 07:46 pm - P.S. Turing is my hero
Harogasm
I started reading The Indian Clerk, which I have wanted to read for a while because—novel about math! I didn't realize it was historical fiction until about the 3rd chapter, when Hardy's love of the male form became inescapably obvious. I had a Canon Compliance Brigade moment, and proceeded to look up G. H. Hardy on Wikipedia—which makes no mention he is gay. He's not even in the LGBT people from England category (usually accurate).

WTF? A quick Google landed me on one of those copy-off-Wikipedia-and-repackage-it sites, which said Hardy was gay. So I checked G. H. Hardy's talk page on Wikipedia and there's a huge long discussion (from 2006) about how Hardy's sexuality should be removed from his article. Some of the arguments were sane and reasonable, but others included:
  • it wasn't relevant
  • it's "unnatural and aberrant" and shouldn't be associated with a great man like Hardy (eleventyone!)
As someone wrote back, "Without people like that, Turing could be still alive."

1. If the Conservatives win a majority I will be tempted to do something drastic.

2. For the lighter side of history: Hetalia, a Japanese webcomic with moe anthropomorphized countries. Will soon be conveniently available in anime form. (Ok, half of me is going HOW DARE YOU, but I am learning stuff from it, which means I can't criticize it too much.)

3. After the requisite CPSC 312 showing of a Monty Python clip, my project partner praised British humour and Yes Minister. Unfortunately this means I am now inclined to hunt down the show.
13 Oct 2008 02:15 pm - Alleged "underage" manga case
Harogasm
From here:
The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has signed on as a special consultant to the defense of Chistopher Handley, an Iowa collector who faces up to 20 years in prison for possession of manga. [...] Handley, 38, faces penalties under the PROTECT Act (18 U.S.C. Section 1466A) for allegedly possessing manga that the government claims to be obscene. The government alleges that the material includes drawings that they claim appear to be depictions of minors engaging in sexual conduct. No photographic content is at issue in Handley's case.

I really didn't expect it to happen - Nitta Youka plagiarising - out-and-out tracing - poses, clothes and scenes from fashion magazines (proof here might be NWS). Manga artists often use photos for reference, but not quite this blatantly.

The last time something like this happened, Suetsugu Yuki was accused of plagiarising several poses from the popular manga Slam Dunk. (Someone on 2ch discovered it. The internet does wonders.) The publisher of Suetsugu's work issued an apology, and ceased printing all of her work.

Nitta Youka's more popular than Suetsugu was, and the manga in question has been animated - pulling the plug won't be easy :x

(As an aside: Even with manga, Western fandom is usually pretty OMG stop being so hard on my favourite writer for plagiarising!! It doesn't matter if s/he did a little something bad. This is true even of other people like entertainers and their indiscriminaces. But Japanese fandom's always like: you did something WRONG, we will NEVER forgive you. The NewS underage drinking incident is a recent example.

The Chinese are like that too, I think. Everyone hates Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li for being "women who bring shame on the Chinese", "act completely like Westerners", "wear revealing clothing", "using their fame to get (Western) boyfriends", and "having multiple boyfriends". - There's another word for that last one, but let's not go there.)
